Question for all that DO NOT live in CA
OK i have lived in California my hole life 29 years.
i am a little fed up with all the laws: don't do this, you can't put that on your truck, your truck is killing the birds / trees bla bla bla. So i was thinking could i ask one of you not from the lovely state of California could you buy my catalytic converter's and a muffler?? i would pay for it and the shipping of course ether through pay pal or mail you a money order.
have not chosen a brand just know not the 500.00 OEM model the state wants.
i am an honest friendly guy trying to get around the BS..

No, companies have this note at the bottom saying "this cat is not legal in the state of California, but we have Ca legal cats in stock."
Something i was thinking all i really need is an address from the other side of the wall :-) from CA
I can pay for it all you would need to do is ship it to me i will pay the shipping charge.
There must be someone out willing to fight the power.

are you planning to install in yourself, or have someone else do it ?
the reason they state - not legal in CA. is because they are not CARB approved, therefore according to the great state of CA, not legal for sale. Some parts companies will go to the trouble to get CARB approval, and others don't. For those that do, there's a cost associate with approval, and they add it in.
I don't know, but i'd guess that most shops won't install anything not CARB approved, otherwise they get involved in something illegal that could cost them big fines.
So, if you're planning on having it done, you better make sure that your install shop will install a non-CARB cat or else you're wasting your time and money.
If you're installing it yourself, then its your own game.
Have you tried ordering a non-CA cat and having it shipped to your home. I'd think most places would still sell and ship, but advise you its not legal. You could always try the line - its for my my buddies car in NV, blah, blah. might work.

thought of that thinking the store needs to make money to. but summit customer service called me the vary next day. wanting to make sure i under stood i would be receiving the CA legal cat and that i would need to send them more money to cover the price.
so there must be a hefty fine for selling this highly legal parts to a California resident.
i tried the it is not for my truck saying i was buying it for a friend in Washington as a surprise gift for witch i would be installing when i got up there to see them this summer. no good i need to have it shipped to him or sent him a gift certificate.
Yes i plan to do the install myself. once it is installed i can say i had it on before the law went into action.

I'm with you on this dude! Fight the monstrous government in Sacramento. I hope it works out for you, and if it does I would be very interested in how you do it. If I ever need it, this will be a great lesson.
For people in other states, you just have NO idea how bad it is. To give you one example, yesterday I went to buy some paint to paint the trim on my house. It wasn't your usual run down to Lowes and buy some paint, NO! Last year, they past another STUPID law that you cannot buy oil based paints in LA or OC any more. So I already have oil based paint on my trim. I would have to sand all the trim, apply a primer and use water based paint over it. (Are you freaking kidding me!, you know how much work that is?) So I had to take a one hour drive, each way, to San Bernardino to buy oil based paint since it's legal out in the dessert. Is that fun or what? Fight the system dude!

I am all for preserving our enviroment but this is getting out of hand, at some point all of this extra money is going to end up hurting us so much we won't be able to enjoy the enviroment.

I hate to be the barer of bad news, but your gonna get pinched when you go to smog it. It's not as easy as just saying you had it there before the law came into effect. I'm just telling you because it would REALLY suck to have to buy another cat if you get pinched. The fact of the matter is that on your upper radiator support, it will say if it's CA certified, and if it has a 49 state cat on it...need I say more. I feel your pain though. Because of these damn tree huggers, (I live in CA, Bay Area) when my cat went out, I had to buy a CA cat. Good luck.
I am confused ....you have a calif emissions vehicle.
why do you need to replace cat?
do they actually LOOK at it? Is it physically different?
I thought you drive up they just plug into your OBDII & interfaced to their machine...turn on cel ck bulb, no codes, monitors set ....you pass.... Am I wrong?
PS emission testing sucks.....we would to help with a reasonable workaround.
