Default First questions!

Ok, so i got my first few questions about my truck. Hope they dont sound to dumb.

1.) Floored it on a clear hwy no traffic and top speed was 92mph. Normal?

2.)I have a remote start kit, how hard is it to install?

3.) I would like to a keyless entry system it has the auto door locks so what all would i need to make it keyless? Is this hard to do?

4.) How big is my fuel tank? I see its either 26gal or 35 gal.

5.) what kind of mpg should i expect?

6.) cold weather( like -30 to -40) for usually 2 weeks or so a year at least once. How will it handle it? It does have a block heater and new battery.

7.) I want to convert to rear disc brakes. Can i do this? How hard is it? How much?

Sorry for all the questions at once!

thanks a bunch!
Josh

Wow. Are you familiar with Google? How about our forum search feature? It's not that the questions sound dumb. They ARE dumb!

1. How would we know without knowing what gear ratio you have?

2. Again, how would we know without knowing what brand the kit is or what's involved? Did it not come with instructions?

3. It can be. What brand is your kit? Did it not come with instructions?

4. It is either 24 or 35 gallons. Generally, only the diesels and the V10 have the 35 gallon tank, but it was an option on the V8s.

5. How do you drive? Where do you live? Duh!

6. Throw a blanket over it and tell it a bedtime story.

7. Well documented conversion, do a search for it. There are cheaper/easier ways to get better rear brakes, but most braking is done by the fronts. Concentrate on improving them, first.

1. I've gotten my 97 5.2L 4x4 to 101MPH, so that's probably about normal.
4. Long box or short box? If you're bed is 6.5ft, your tank is 26gal, if it's 8ft, your tank is 35gal.
6. Flush your cooling system and make sure it's at least 50/50 antifreeze water, but 60/40 is better (3gal antifreeze, 2gal distilled water). Also, use 5W-30 oil in winter vs 10W-30.
Not sure on the other questions. Someone else will poke their head in soon.

My 1997 Ram will hit top speed of 120 on the speedometer, and keep pulling. My GPS unit tells me that it tops out at about 125. It takes a while for it to get there, but it does accomplish that. I'd say that it's the higher altitude that's causing your issue.

Block heaters work wonders.

Hmm... Mine only hit 100 when I was back in Texas.
Haven't tried it up here in Montana yet.
Could be due to the plenum and/or 3.55 gears with 265/75 tires.

Depends. Different model years have different speed limiters. That might be normal for a 1996. I'd wait for others with that model year to speak up to know for sure.

2.)I have a remote start kit, how hard is it to install?
Not as difficult as a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with an ignition immobilizer, but not easy. You really have to know what you're doing with your wiring.

3.) I would like to a keyless entry system it has the auto door locks so what all would i need to make it keyless? Is this hard to do?
Again, you'd better know your wiring.

4.) How big is my fuel tank? I see its either 26gal or 35 gal.
Have you filled the truck up yet? Run it down to 1/4 tank, or even 1/2 tank, how much fuel does it take to fill back up?

BTW, Miami is slightly off. 26 gallon tank, 34 gallon tank, or 35 gallon tank. 26s for short bed 1500s, 34 gallon (optional) for 2500 short beds, 35 gallon for long beds 1500s/2500s.

5.) what kind of mpg should i expect?
Try doing a search here on the forums, this has been discussed soooooo many times, its not even funny anymore.

6.) cold weather( like -30 to -40) for usually 2 weeks or so a year at least once. How will it handle it? It does have a block heater and new battery.
You'll want to use that block heater. If I don't use mine at -10, she doesn't want to start in the mornings.

7.) I want to convert to rear disc brakes. Can i do this? How hard is it? How much?
Expensive, pretty labor intensive. If ya don't have mechanical abilities, don't attempt it yourself.

Even with 4.56s and 31" tires it would still have a top speed of 104MPH in direct gear before redlining. A speed limiter is a far more likely cause of the 92MPH top speed.

Mine wasn't redlining at 100.
Anyway.
Not to thread jack, but where do you get block heaters?
Tried some auto stores online and didn't find anything. Tried eBay but my search for 97 ram, 97 dodge, dodge ram, 5.2l -block heater came up with nothing.
I'm probably going to need one when it gets to -20 if Jason's won't start at -10. My truck's been in Texas it's whole life, so it's not really winterized at all. It's almost like Texas winter up here already.
