Default Where to get a 1 11/16" 6-point Socket?

I want to remove the hub nut on my 98 Ram. According to this site and pavementsucks.com I need a 1 11/16" socket. I went to SEARS today and they only had 12-point sockets of that size.

If I wanted to stick with the 6-point socket, where's the best place to get it? Online?

Last, will the 12-point socket work, or would it just round off the nut?

thanks,
pf

Unless there is a defect on the nut (already rounded off, excessively rusted and about to crumble) the 12 point socket will work just fine. 90% of my stuff is 12 point.

If you're set on a six point socket in that size, check Matco and Snap-On.

Mine is a 12pt. I got it at Napa. Just currious, why do you WANT to remove it? This isn't something I ever WANT to do. But those damn bearings don't like 35's and steel wheels.

Mine more than rounded off the nut on my 98. We tried a 3/4 inch drive with a breaker bar/ cheater pipe and it wouldn't move. I tried heat and the nut was seized so tight, it smeared the threads so bad I had to replece the shaft. I would try to find a 6 point but you have to use what's on hand unless you want to wait for the order to come in. Are you replacing wheel bearings? If so, I would do the u joints and make sure you pay the extra money for the better ones that have a grease fitting on them. They also make different grades of wheel bearings.. Once again buy the better ones and use anti-seize when reassembling it. I put it on all of the metal to metal contact points. Wish someone else would have done that with the nuts and where the bearing housing goes into the hub. Would have been an easier tear down.

I'm the opposite of you... 90% of my sockets are 6pt. One of the bolts on my 4 wheeler bumper hit a rock and smushed the head. Didn't notice it until I had to remove the bumper a month ago and the 6pt socket wouldn't go on. Grabbed the 12pt and a hammer, thats the only time I use 12pts (as a last resort). To the OP, personally i'd find a 6point if possible but if your in a bind go with the 12 pt.

Here is a ingersoll rand 1/2" drive 1-11/16 deep impact socket (ignore the images of product on webpage)

Snap On's socket price is high as you would expect, but here it is...

Here is an SK deep impact

Most of my stuff is 12 point only because I work on aircraft too. Most hardware on turbines is 12 point.

If I only did cars I would use mostly six point because of the increased wall thickness, but I have found that only on rare occasions do I actually need to use six point instead of 12.

napa and car quest are way too high on tools. my 3/4" breaker bar was only 15$ at tractor supply, i bet that thing would have been 50$ at napa.

I try to never go to our local Napa. They are so over priced its not funny. You will find something on Napa's website for one price, go to the store and they have it marked up even higher. I'm always in pain and walking funny when I leave there.

I will take the extra time and gas to drive to Advance
