Default Speedo Problem

speedometer cuts in and out while driving. my question is what sensor sends the speed signal to the speedometer (assuming its electric)? and where is it located?

99 and earlier have the speed sensor in the tailshaft of the transmission. When I had my 99 I had to clean all the metal shavings off and it was fine.

used to have a 97 dakota, and the speedo and tach sometimes wouldint work unless you tapped on the plastic. musta been a loose connection in the dash on mine.

single bolt with bracket located on drivers side. be ready to stuff a rag in the hole until you are ready to reinstall.

auto trans speed sensor on my 01 4wd is on passenger side, at the rear of the t-case. not much fluid comes out - less than a cup and just enough to make a little mess if your not sort of ready for the swap.

i'm not familiar with the sensor setup on your 95, but the later models also have a speed sensor/abs sensor in the top of the rear diff. the official name of it on most parts lookups are rear abs sensor. its sort of square shaped and sells for about $30. it also has interaction with the speedo. the one in the trans/t-case is cheaper, only about $16.
