Yes the overhead console changed in earlier years I think 98 and older only show the compass and temp and the newer ones do the mileage etc...

Ok this is something I have been considering for a long time. But now after reading this thread or the three merged threads you could say I'm a little confused. LOL

Some say its plug and play some not... Some say 98 is the same as the 99 to 01 some no...

So can my 98 use another console other than a 98 model?? Will it just plug up and work if I get the console plus the temp sensor?? Or do I need a wiring harness??

Well, you can tell which you have by comparing to the ones on Ebay(search ram overhead console). The earlier ones are smaller than the later ones. The new one will be the same shape as your computer-less one is now.

It's not too hard to tell if you have the harness already, you just snap out your current console (see instructions on this site) and take a look. Routing the new ones is the hardest part. In my case, the small harness was there, and I taped it to the new one, and pulled it through (I do make this sound easier than it was). The full swap took me about 3 hours, and a sore neck from squeezing myself down near my fuse panel!

It's not a complex task, just takes time and patience.

Newbie here. Great description of how to install overhead console. I am attempting to install console with computer in my 2002 Ram 2500. Have found all the wires and components but am at a loss as how to disconnect the brown connector from the back of the fuse junction box. I can see it with great effort and feel it with my hand but can't release it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The console for the dakotas are different and unlikely to fit easily.

My truck has the everything but lighted vanity mirrors and roof lights. Is the harness for those part of the harness for the console or a different harness that runs with it? Anyone with a 2001 have any idea?

I'd like to add those two options.

I have a question, Why are the pictures always deleted or supposedly in Photobucket? There is never a link or any way of finding them, Does the moderator have something against photo's? The pictures are invaluable but the thread without is useless. This guy went to considerable effort to post only to have his pictures removed.

I did this with mine except I run two wires to the ODB II plug. Worked fine. That was a few years ago but the wires got disconnected and I can’t remember what two holes they went to in the ODBII plug. Does anyone know? I would appreciate if someone could let me know.
