Default Shift from Park to drive "clank clank"?!?

I've got a 95' Dodge 2500 4x4
When I shift from park to drive I hear a metal on metal sound
the best example I know of is like hitting two concrete stakes together
I hold my foot on the break and shift it into reverse and it doees the same thing
once I get rolling there are no other noises
does anyone have any ideas
please!!

Almost definitely your U-joints are worn out. Although mine has a distinctive "clunk" when I shift into reverse most of the time. I'm told it's normal, and all these trucks have it.

I'd check your u-joints for play though before anything else, and if you get new ones make sure you get the kind with grease fittings.

Too much backlash in the ring gear will also cause this.

mine only does it in reverse, i should have mentioned that earlier but if it is the ring gear backlash how much of a pain is that to fix? i haven't done a whole lot of that kind of work, i have changed out rearends but that was the whole unit.

It's a very normal sound from the tranny. Most if not all 2nd gen autos do this. Search around guys, it has been covered.
