Cheap but good tuner
yeah thats an oxymoron......and most of the tuners offer little advantage unless you step up to the more agressive program which requires higher octane gas+ more $.
sta away from the volo ones on ebay...I reasearched them a bit and saw others saw a dyno proven decrease in hp and torque over stock.
and theres only a few options for us 96 owners superchips , mopar pcm and jet performance as far as external tuners I believe.

+1, unless that has changed recently.
^ Ah, no. SC claims that they can support the late 97 rams. Possible that a tuner for 98 and up will work out of the box, or they will make a one shot tune for it.

It's what they say at least.

Besides that, what are you getting for mpg? Next thing you should do before spending any money, is doing a search here for Plenum gasket. Which if blown (which it probably is) will effect the cat and the precat o2 sensor.

The Review for an SCT Tuner on a stock motor. The review was done on a 96 1500, Richard Petty Series.
+1 Any modification you do is going to require a little more money. The plus side to this is you get a little more MPG.
I would think that Hemifever could probably chock up an SCT tuner for you if the 96s are supported. SCT all the way in my opinion. The only advantage that the Superchips have are that they can calibrate speedos. And I think Hemifever was offering 275 for a stock motor based SCT with 89, 93 octane, and a tow tune I believe. 375 for any modifications such as Cold Air Intake, Exhaust, Headers, Re-gearing, and so on...
