is it getting spark? fuel? if neither, id suspect the asd (auto shut down) relay its in the underhood fuse box. swap it with the a/c clutch relay, or fuel pump relay.
let me know what you find.

is the starter turning ?
try mashing the gas pedal some. that help any ? (bypasses iac)
when you first turn the ignition on, can you hear the fuel pump whine ?
with a rag to shield your eyes and clean up the mess, and while not smoking, press the valve stem in the fuel rail test port. does gas squirt out ? (like 49 psi worth)
12 volts at the coil ?
spark at the plugs ?

try a spark test, take a plug wire off the spark plug(preferably number 1 drivers side very front closest to rad.), put a screw driver in the boot, where the spark plug would go, and hold it about 1/8" away from a ground (i use the master cyl. for the brakes. or even the steel brake line), and have someone try to start it, if dont see a spark, check the coil. im not sure how to test it, its been like 3 years since ive tested one, but if you take it to your auto parts store they should be able to test it there.

however if you have a spark, check for fuel.

no...it will not always be noticeable. i cant here mine when i try to...and it fires every time i turn the key.

you really need to test for spark. not unusual for a coil to go bad.

if you are scared to use the screwdriver then get an ignition tester...about $15

a spark test is a must, and its the first thing i always do. its the simplest test you can do really.
