You should have a hitch receiver welded into your bumper so you can get a receiver winches, that way you can atatch it to the front or rear bumper as needed, plus if you ever need pulled out or need to pull someone out from behind you can just put a hitch in your front bumper. Even better than tow hooks.
1/4" works good for mounts/brackets and the center of the bumper, 1/8 when triangulated it pretty damn strong for the outside of the bumper. 3/16" is a good compromise. C channel also works but it's kind of a pain to work with. Just don't go absolutly huge, think about approach angles and such.

Yea I don't want it down to the ground. Like I said he is a welder by trade. So he knows how to do it and do it right. Plus he can get the c channel for free. Unless there is another type of metal I should look at besides plate steel. Mind you this all will be cut with grinder/saw sawzall no plazma at his house yet. He does want to get one put no money for one.

Grinders take forever for making bumpers and all the dust is itchy as hell but it's cheap. We've got a torch but no plasma, most cuts we do with grinders.
