What do you use to identify that. I found two metal tags on the screws that hold on the cover plate on the differential housing. One was "35" and the other "1886" (as I recall). So how do I tell if I have a Dana 60,70, or 80. Or is there only one "kind" installed on these trucks. There is a capacity chart posted at the top of the forum, and depending on what kind of differential you have has a bearing on what the capacity is. I really don't care about the capacity, as I will fill it to about 3/4 " from the bottom of the fill hole, but I might need to know for some other reason, in the future.

Is that stamped anywhere? I saw two tags attached to the bolts that hold on the differential cover. One said "35" and the other said "1886". Do those mean anything.

Also, when refilling the differential after an oil change, how critical is the fluid level? I noticed on the capacity thread stuck to the top of this forum that one rear end required to be to filled 5/8 " from hole, while another required 3/4". I don't think I will be able to discern a 1/8" difference in fluid levels.

(oops sorry, i double posted)

Correct 3.55 for a 4x4 unless u have the sport or off road. 4x2 you could get 3.92's.

I have a 2WD. So what does that mean 3.55 or 3.92. And how do you know that it is one or the other? Cereal Killer said I had 9 1/4. Is that the same thing. And again, how do you know for sure?

9.25 is what your rear axle. 3.55 and 3.92 is you gear size. Open your glove box and it will tell you what you have. Trust you you have a 9.25 in the rear ALL 1500'S DO. Unless they axle swapped for dana 60's.

We know for sure because, as dodge15004x45.9 said, all 1994-2001 Ram 1500s came from the factory with a Dana 44 front axle and a Chrysler (Corporate) 9.25 rear axle.

Ram 2500s from 1994-1995 came with the same axles as the 1500s.

However, from 1996-2002...

Front axles, Ram 2500 and Ram 3500: Dana 60
Rear axles varied depending on engine/transmission:
-If you have the 5.9L V8 in a 2500: Dana 60
-If you don't have the 5.9L V8, have an automatic transmission, and a 2500: Dana 70
-If you don't have the 5.9L V8, have a manual transmission, and a 2500: Dana 80
-If you have a 3500: Dana 80

The "Sport" package had nothing to do with performance/engine/lift/gears/anything. It was just an appearance package, where the front was the same color as the rest of the truck, and the tail gate lost the "tail get protector" rubber piece along its bottom half.
