Default Metric Tire Sizes Confuse Me

Why does it have to be so complicated? What happened to "how tall" and "how wide" like the Inches system?

Anyway, my coworker has a Chebby with 285X75R16 tires on it and I like that size. I think it would work well on my Dodge. The rub is, I have 17" stock rims. So how does that convert? Maybe: 285X60R17?

Sorry, when I said "rub," I meant "problem."

My Ram is a 4x4 RCSB with a 4" lift. I'm running 33X12.50R15's now on a set of centerline rims that are spaced outside the body about 2 inches. I don't like them. Hence the aquisition of the 17" steel stockers.

So, 285X70R17's eh? Are those tires about the same size as my coworker's 285X75R16's?

Thanks, Sherrif!

http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html
on the left side you'll see tire a and tire b boxes, fill those out and check off the compare a to b and it'll compare them for you.

this one is another good one.
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

285 75 16 is 32.8" and 285 70 17 is 32.7"
285 75 17 is 33.8"

so i'm glad i didn't get 285 75 17 because i would be rubbing pretty good.

I check www.tirerack.com for that size and pulled up nothin. I don't think that's a popular size. Right now, I've got about 3 inches or more from the rear of the tire to the control arms at full lock. That'll be closer with the stock wheel because they'll be inside the body of the truck more (which I want). I guess a 285X70R17 wouldn't be bad.

Thanks!

285 70 17 is a common size and is the perfect size as far as looks and not rubbing for a stock 4x4

Gotcha. Unfortunately, I just looked up the tire I want to run (same as I have now: Maxxis Buckshot Mudder) and they don't come in a 285X70R17. They come in a 265 and 305 but no 285 for the 17" rim size. Would a 305 fit without rubbing? My truck's got a 4" lift but I know that has little to do with whether a tire will rub on the control arms. These tires are not the widest mudders out there and the tread patter is actually narrower than other mudders.
