What is this hose on my axle?

My truck failed safety inspection once becuase that hose was cracked. I asked the inspector to show me the cracked hose and he pointed to that. I said "you mean the axle vent?" He said "No that is a brake hose, see how the lines come out of that?" I pulled out a pocket knife and said "Go ahead. Cut the hose. If it brake fluid comes out of it, I will gladly pay you to replace it. If nothing comes out, it is on you." He then traced it up and saw that he was wrong and passed the inspection. He didn't even apologize for the mistake. I wasn't sure if he was trying to scam me into work I obviously didn't need or if he was just dumb.

Sounds like an honest mistake by an incompetent moron, does happen

thats a good burn.

sound like when the inspector was telling me that my exhaust was going to leak at the back of the muffler because of the big hole in it. but what he didn't know was that the muffler is just a shell on my y-pipe for inspection passing purposes.
