A lot of times thats how they go...the last of lining wears off, something gets plugged, the fluid overheats, and its a downhill spiral.
At least it didn't go >BANG<...trust me, that becomes VERY expensive.

When its rebuilt, make sure they flush and/or replace the check valve and your cooler.

Oh, and take it to a reputable shop, not AAmco.

As long as the repair doesn't exceed the value of the vehicle or you can't justify junking the vehicle, then by all means spend the money.

I just had the trans rebuilt in my truck at 185K and was told there were signs it was rebuilt before. I had heavier duty parts installed and even after the work ($1750) my is still worth over $3,500.

If it's clean and mostly rust free, and the interior isn't shredded, I'd say go for it.
Of course your motor has a lot of miles on it, and its gonna need some attention some day. But motors can be dealt with. Rust is a whole 'nother matter.

yea get it done. and consider bigger gears in the near future. 33's with 3.55's and towing alot, thats a tad bit more than what she wants IMO
