Unhappy It finally went....damn

Sorry to waste a thread on this, but I believe my transmission went yesterday. Have it at a shop now, estimate is $2000-2500 if its in fact the tranny, which I'm sure it is. Was driving and all of a sudden the od light was on (in otherwords the overdrive should have been off) I never pushed the button and it was clearly in 4th gear, I pushed the button and couldnt get the light to turn off. Then it started acting really funky not going into overdrive, pulled over immediately fluid level was good but black as used motor oil, smelled really bad under the hood like it was burning, then the rest of the drive it wouldnt leave first gear. Being evaluated now, will post when I have more info. I guess its worth having it done right? Idk my dad seems to think its not worth it but Ive invested so much in it I think its worth it, even with 175k miles on it. Oh and my original tranny went to 175k I was pretty impressed on that note.

question is how long was that fluid dark and burnt?.....I doubt it happened all at once.....were you towing? or doing something to put additional strain on it?
