Default 98 5.2 Starting Problem

So I've been having this problem on and off for a while now, sometimes it starts fine then all of a sudden some days I'll have this problem. I get in and turn the key and all the lights, ac/heat, radio all come on as usual, but no start, just a single click then nothing. If I continue to turn the key back and forth, it will contiune the click no start stuff but eventually will start and run perfectly fine. Sometimes I will even get a single turn over while doing this an then it will go to nothing but lights and all are still on and fine. I haven't noticed a difference with the engine being hot or cold. It will also start fine for days or weeks at a time then the problem will come back, sometimes just for 1 or 2 cranks, sometimes for almost every crank for a couple days. Anyone had this problem or know where I should start looking to try to figure it out? Thanks.

Starter could be bad, but check the connections to it first , check the connections on the battery too. Could also be the ignition switch or a wire in the steering column (especially if you have tilt).

The clicking sound seems to indicate a starter problem. If you have a helper when this happens, have the helper turn the key while you listen to the solenoid click. If it is clicking you may have worn solenoid contacts. These starters are robust but the solenoid contacts wear away. I would check the contacts and replace. Much less expensive than a new starter.

I had this starter problem and it was the worn solenoid contacts. Just replaced them.

Thanks for the replies, I think I can rule out the battery connections, as I have already unhooked the battery cables and thoroughly cleaned both of them and the terminals on the battery. So a couple of you mentioned the solenoid connectors, what all is involved with removing and replacing them or do I just replace the whole solenoid? I would rather try that first and find out it doesn't work and have to replace the starter than replace the whole starter right off the bat. If you have the part #'s for what I need that would be a great help also. While Im doing this I think Im probably going to go ahead and do a general tune up, new wires, plugs, cap, rotor, o2 sensor and plenum (and anything else yall would suggest doing), so any suggested parts for this would be appreciated also.

actually my Nissan D21 did the EXACT same thing, and it was the battery terminals not getting a good connection, (because i had a brand new starter in it, not a reman.) There wasnt battery acid on hem either, they actually looked clean, but I Took my knife shaved the inside of the terminals, and shaved the post down a bit. Started right up. About 2 months later did it again. changed the connectors nd it never had a porblem up until i sold it (8 months later)

So dont go out and get a starter just yet. Do what Zman suggested and check the terminals.

Here is some info on starters. Here and here.

Maybe LarryB's may be able to supply the contacts for you. I got mine locally at an automotive electrical shop. Installation instructions are in LarryB's site. The contacts are just L shaped copper fittings that go in the solenoid. These contacts along with the plunger is what causes the starter to engage. They wear down over time. That is the clicking that one hears. The plunger hits but the contacts are worn.

another thing to check is the power wire that goes from the battery to the PDC.
my sister had a similar problem and she changed the ignition switch and that wire at the same time. that wire was blistered from corrosion inside the insulation. so make sure it is clean, tight and smooth.
