You use thinner oil for winter time (under 45 degrees )

Right!!
Never have seen an owners or shop manual saying use thicker oil in winter, of course I haven't seen every thing there is to see.
I'm only 74 years old and still learning.

you use thinner oil in winter because it will be so thick cause its cold... and you never use a oil stabilizer in oil.. it has been proven that oil additives do nothing but promote cavitation wich can rob you of horse power and promote spun bearings... a good oil will be all you need.. mobile 1 or amsoil and royal purple are 3 very good syn oils to use.... beware though that going from a regular oil to a syn in a truck that has never seen syn oil may result in the sudden appearence of leaks never before seen or noticed..... syn does not loose its viscosity over time and has less a chance for thermal break down and with the additives in the syn reconditions seals that may leak do to drying out over time with regular oil.... all oil has to be api sertified to meet auto standards.. if its api sertified it will work no different then any other oil.. all though i am sure some one will chime in to tell me i am wrong........ as far as syn goes they also meet their own certification. but again in my opinion as far as syns go their are good and great.... some are just a cracked hydrocarbon oil base so they can be labeled syn.. a true syn is made from natrual gas stockes.. shaffer 7000 syn is a cracked hydrocarbon.... amsoil and royal purple and mobil 1 are natural gas bases wich makes them more expensive....

in reality when is the last time you have ever herd a motor failing do to what type of oil that was used init? change your oil ever 3000miles(unless syn is used then about 6000) and do your filters too you should never have a problem....

Thinner oil in the winter because it takes longer to warm up and flow. Thicker oil in the summer because it can get too thin in the higher heat. If you run a 20W50 in the summer you should run a 10W40 or even 10W30 in the winter, depending on how cold it gets. With a full synthetic the numbers are different, but same principle.

I like the info on the additive, im going to research that so i can save 15 bucks on my oils changes. and not use the Mobil 1 filter, and use a napa gold.

we use thinner oil up here in Canada lol. Thicker oil wouldn't let you turn the engine over at -40 lol. I use mobil syn 5W30 in the winter.

i use 10w-30 all year round in my vehicles unles its higher performance then 5w-30.

i think amsoil had a video on their site of lucas oil stabiliver added to oil and run you could see all the bubbles in it...

a syn will free up that last bit of power that you can from your motor... people running amsoil filters and oil using their filteration system have been able to go go a full year with out oil changes... all they do is send in a oil sample for testing and go accordingly..... but amsoil and a wix or napa gold filter or a amsoil filter you could go about 10,000 miles on a single oil change
