Default Oil change for winter months

well im do for and oil change soon. i ususally use valvoline 10w-30. should i use 5w-30 for the winter months? thinner oil would be better in the cold months right? and i was thinkin about goin synthetic. if i do that i have to keep using synthetic and cant go back to conventional right?

I use the same year round.
I use 15W50 Mobil 1 in the 96 Ram, have always used 20W50 dino in the 87.
It doesn't hurt anything to change back to dino.

IMO your supposed to run thicker oil in winter due to the cold temp. Here it can get down below -40 so its a bit chilly.
But the thicker oil can stand up to the cold because it wont freeze, Its hard to get it to freeze but if it was to freeze then your not going anywhere til you warm it up.
Ive always changed my oil before winter and used a thicker oil
