IOD short
2000 Ram 2500 Ext cab 4x4, 5.9L
bone stock.
My IOD (Ignition On Drain) fuse (10 amp) keeps blowing. The things that run off this fuse are the CHMSL (what is this?), cargo lamp, OBD port, dome lamp, glove box lamp, map lamps, power mirrors, radio, and the under hood lamp. It blows fast as soon as I make a connection with the fuse, it must have a lot of juice running through it because it melts the tabs on the fuses. I've tried bigger fuses up to 30 Amps just to try and nothing works. I must have a short somewhere but can't seem to find it. It blows fuses whether or not ignition is on. I just bought the truck this way so I don't know its history well.
Any one have this happen? Have a clue where to start looking for a exposed wire? I've torn apart my dash already. I'm about to seek professional help tommorrow unless someone can offer some guidance.
The radio is stock (I know someone is going to accuse me of having an aftermarket stereo deck) . Any help is much appreciated!

Well try unhooking your radio. from the fuse inside the cab. That should cut the power to that. and the blower motor and the cablights are tied into one fuse inside the cab if i remeber right. So try that too.
IOD is Ignition Off Draw, not Ignition On Drain. Anything that still can be powered while the ignition is off. Like power locks, door chime, alarm system, dome lights, head lights, chair motor, heated mirrors, cig lighter, aux power, etc. One of those has a short to ground. Somewhere either a positive wire has rubbed through the insulation and is touching something running to the frame, or a recent wiring job was done wrong.
You're going to have to get a multimeter and start testing wires. Was there anything working intermittently before the fuse blew? That's a good place to start.
And stop putting bigger fuses in, you'll just do more damage than is already done. Those fuses are designed to blow before you burn up the electronics. Over-amp them and you'll be buying lots of new goodies.

i learnerd the hard way a few years ago when i put a 30 amp in a 10 amp slot....hd to replace a good section of the wiring harness not to long afterward for all the wires melted together.
and also that is a very easy diagnostic (kinda...the finding it is the hard part) but it is def. a ground, or a wire chaffed

I had a weird problem like that to. same fuse. but like my radio would work, but as soon and i opened the door or opened the glove box or turned the interior lights on the radio would cut out until i turned the lights off or closed the door. weird i know. but i just put a new fuse in and everything went back to normal and havent had a problem since. But i did burry the truck in some water so i had to pull up the carpet and dry the wires out that run down by the door.

thanks for the info guys, that's about what I figured I was just hoping there was a common problem with a specific wire chaffing in these trucks, don't worry I stopped with the fuses.
