You can weld it if you want. I had a z71 with a welded diff it did fine to be honest with you. ive also had a 240sx with a welded diff and a few friends of mine still run them. I have never personally had problems i actually think my 240sx was more noticable than my z71. In the z71 i could really only tell when i was trying to pull into a parking space. They also welded a diff on this weeks xtreme 4x4. But i would keep a spare diff around just in case.

i can probally call 5-7 people running welded diffs right now and have been for years with no problems. Its all about how you drive it. its no more strain than a locker. A locker supposedly "unlocks" when you let off the gas but in my experience the only time im turning sharp enough to need it to unlock im turning on to another street or into a parking space. so its gonna be locked anyway.

welded spider gears don't allow the outside tire to rotate more during a turn so you'll be looking at faster tire wear if you do a lot of pavement driving because when you turn sharp the inside tire will slip and skip.

i'm not saying don't do it, but it isn't for me.
now if i had a trail only truck that would be different story. both axles would be welded.

You don't want a locker or welded gears on the street. If you were offroading then you would. On the street it is too much strain on the axle when turning.
