Welding rear spider gears?????
Welded/spooled rear ends will eat tires on the street,
Lockers aren't that bad on the street, I've never noticed any extra tire wear FWIW.
IMO Ian on Xtreme4x4 did not weld it properly. You need to also weld the side gears to the carrier, this takes the load off the cross-pin and small welds on the spider gears and distrubutes it throughout the carrier.

having a welded rear end is not too bad of a thing in the winter but it is in the summer tires get destroyed. my friend weld the rear end up on his jeep and it was fun as ever. he could cut some really tight donuts. you have to make sure you weld them good or else they make an awful noise when the welds break.
the only thing i know is if you weld them it will not give at all like when you make a sharp turn it will bind up like its in 4x4 because WELDING SPIDER GEARS is not like a locker its like a SPOOL which is intended for street use even lockers give a little when you are in a sharp turn.
im new here sorry
im new here sorry
and one other thing... just weld the spider gears to them selfs and not to the carrier, that way if you dont like it, just torch the spiders back out and replace with new, dont even have to reset the backlash or worrie about the ring and pinion
I would use a mig welder and get everything real clean so you minimize splatter and slag and maybe use a little splatter shield spray to keep any spatter loose. Clean out the diff housing real good when your done.
I ran a spool once on a street car I only drove in the summer. I didn't mind the tire wear and noise, but the cops did. The spool started to become a bit expensive and out it came.

Here is a copy and paste from a previous post I did. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1440422-post2.html
By welding the spiders you will loose out on the streetablilty of the truck. It is ment only for dragstrip and Offroad use only. On the street it is tuff turning the vechicle with out braking one tire loose.
For a streetable locker there are several to choose from. ARB (Selectable air locker), Lockright (automatic locker), LSD (Limited Slip Differential).

I have a lockright No Slip in my truck. It is great! I love the traction I get offroad!
The way Xtreem 4x4 did was for an axle without c-clips, and ruins the case. Here is a quick pic of prety much what they did.

This is what you should do. Weld all 4 gears, inbetween each tooth. Leave parralles teeth unwelded. I welded up my spiders like this for my Dragster TA. It has handled the abuse so far. And this will alow you to dissasimble the setup if you want to change an axle out or anything.

LOL I guess its perfect timing. The newest edition of Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road They wrote up an artical about welding spiders.

I'm going to post this under the FAQ2 for anyone to refer back to.
