thanks guys now the main reason for my question is my 1987 ramcharger has a 1979 318 la or pre mag in it which my dad built its got 360 j heds bowl ported milled 20 tousands to bring comp back up milodon valves 2.02 in 160 ex m&p duel coil springs m&p cam 508lift high volume oil pump windage tray heddmen hedders m&p duel plane intake holler street avenger carb 670 cfm 3200 rpm huges stall converter
all with stock replacement internals such all the pistons and so forth
with this set up it makes nerly 390 hp at 6400 rpm on engine dyno not sure whats put to the ground though never had it dynoed installed it the truck
now i can do such a build with the 360 mag in my 01 1500 or are the new mags a totally different concept???

The harmoninc set up by a floating the valve train makes perfect sense, along with the belief that the lifter bore shanks may be thinner on some castings than others.
BTW the blocks are a bit different, they are designed for extra head bolts and also are not drilled through the lifter bores for upperend lubrication.
If I were building a magnum block I would have it carefully inspected by an engine builder who specializes in Mopar engines, or purchase a block from them.

Biggest difference in the mag design over the LA is the heads, there's a few things they re-engineered, but not many. There was a website around that listed the significant differences but I can't recall what it was, maybe it was mopar muscle or hotrodding. Try searching mopar LA Vs. Magnum or dodge magnum vs LA engine.

Still and all, this is a 13 year old thread. No reason to resurrect it.
