the only real way is by taking it to the dealer, as ive seen a 96 ram with the OBD2 connector, but the communications protocol was OBD1 as it would not link up to a OBD2 code scanner.
you might be able to take it to advance or autozone and have them hook up their code scanner to it. then you will know.

BTW this seems to get brought up about one a month you can search and find more threads covering all this like I did for my 96.

However, either you baby your truck 99% of the time, or something is wrong with your truck's air/fuel ratio. Running the 93 tune on 87 octane gas should be causing ping city.
If you don't already know about the whole leaking plenum problem (the reason for the "death flash", do a search, you'll find a gazillion threads on it), the Hughes kit fixes it. A new aluminum plenum plate, a new gasket (or you can use a Felpro like I did, even better than the one Hughes gives you), new bolts. Problem half solved. (The tuner fixes the other half, the "death flash", as we are already discussing.)
Nothing wrong with BWD distributor cap and rotor. Thats what I run.

I only had it on 93 twice once with 93, and once with 87, i was running the 87 on the 93 tune when i had replaced my plugs, wires, and cap and rotor. so that mightve had something to do with it...but lik i said it did ping, just at or around 4000rpm sometimes higher sometimes lower, and i think it also has something to do with the fact that i do fill up at the same hess as i know they sell a good qty of 87 and 93, as they're right on US1, and about 2 blocks from one of the many boat ramps around here. ive also seen the tanker there 3 times in a 2 week span, and they usually have the lowest price in town as well...
but i do baby my truck, i change the oil every 3,000 on full syn. and i really need to get my trans serviced.
and i dont mind the BWD parts, but from what i read on here they're not of the best quality, but ive never had a problem. the only things ive ran into problems with was a set of xact plug wires from advance but those were for my 87 ranger that has been long sold, and they were arcing all over the place.
