superchips
hey i was considering buy a superships tuner for my truck and then i thought about it. all you do is program the truck and put it back in the box right? so is there anything stopping someone from buying it, tuning their truck and reselling it on ebay or something?
+1 .. once the programmer has been used it is Vin locked.. an only way to unlock it ,..is either flash factory back.. or send it to be unlocked..
you are taking a risk in buying a used superchips. its possible to sell a worthless VIN locked unit. some people might do this accidently out of ignorance, not understanding the VIN lock process. others might intentionally do it as a rip off.
the question you want to ask the seller.... did YOU personally uninstall the tuning program and do you "money back guarantee it" to not be VIN locked. if they don't seem to understand what you're asking, or won't guarantee it, then don't buy it.
i bought one new from an ebay seller "chip_my_ride" for about $230. they're not that cheap anymore, but contact them and negotiate.

+1 on the chip my ride, i got mine for 250 shipped to my door. i called him to see if my payment went through, and he was more than willing to help me out, he even went out of his way to check to see if my payment was recieved.
Hope you have a Hughes plenum kit installed (or equivalent), otherwise the Superchips (or any other good tuner) will make your engine ping like crazy.

i called my local dealership the other day and they told me that they couldn't flash the pcm back to the stock timing. they're idiots by the way.
then i called the dealership in the next town where i got my truck and they said "sure can, but it might damage your pistons." i told them that with a good plenum gasket then i won't have to worry about the pistons, they said, "oh, well bring it on down. it'll cost 100$." 100$ is better than 250+ for a tuner, and as long as you're sitting right next to them watching the screen to make sure they set it back to stock then i can't see how you can go wrong with letting the dealership program the timing back to stock.

while mostly true, there are certain ones where they dont ping, such as mine, it dont start pingin till around 4400RPM but by the point its shifting.
