I admit defeat about the muffler. Cherry Bomb claims that that's what the paint is supposed to do on them very quickly. They claim that when the paint burns off, it leaves a residue that is supposed to keep oxidation down. I doubt you have a lean condition, and I'd leave the high temp paint off of it as well.

Also, I have a Cherry bomb muffler and the paint is peeling just like that.
