Seems like they used be called vibration dampeners because that is what they do.
On an externally balanced engine the dampener is not perfectly balanced, it will have a heavy side to compensate for an non balanced crankshaft in the engine.
Maybe someone else will jump in and do a better job of explaining than I can.

 

Ah yes you are right that is what they called it but as far as it sliding into the front seal they are same. they both wear and they both need inspection when replacing that seal

the 5.2L is internally balanced so the HB is statically balanced, its job is to absorb crankshaft harmonics. A 5.9L is externally balanced, the HB on this engine is basically the same as the 5.2 except it has a counterweight on it. also the 5.9 will have a counterwieght on the opposite side of rotation mounted on the flywheel or flexplate.

 

5.2 does have HB.
i don't know that its possible to put the seal in wrong. it sort of only goes one way.
it might need a sleeve. its also possible that it just failed...

i put new seals on the rear axles of my daughter's 4runner. one worked like it was supposed to and the other one leaked and i had to replace it again. don't know why, but it just did.

$hit, that's a lot of work to replace that seal again.

 

im sorry for how i acted before.....i had my maxima get towed and i had to pay 350 bucks to bail it out of the colission center...(didnt have registered plates.) And i didnt have the money to throw out like that with x-mas rightaround the corner.

So as you can tell i was pissd that day...so im sorry for my remarks.
