Default No overdrive...

Had to run to town to drop my truck off at the body shop after that guy hit me. On the way to town my truck wouldn't shift into overdrive at all. It was about -20 this morning so i am wondering if this had something to do with it?

Any ideas?? Tranny fluid looked good, no CEL, no other issues.

how far did you drive? i believe that the transmission won't shift into overdrive if it is below a certain temp.

that should have been plenty of time to get the transmission up to temp.
if the fluid overheats then it won't shift into overdrive either but you will have a dummy light that says trans temp on the dash.

man we need another transmission tech on this forum.
search dodge talk and see what you can find because they have tactransman.

I am by no means a transmission guy other than that I've had quite a bit done to mine and replaced it once, but if I remember correctly there is an overdrive circuit of some sort that may be shorted out. You could also have a faulty trans temp sensor. That will automatically cut your overdrive off, but in my experience you will get both a trans temp light and an O/D off light. These are probably best case scenario.

If I remember correctly, someone was telling me that the overdrive is in it's own compartment in the transmission, kind of added on as an afterthought. I don't recall if it was a 2nd gen Dodge that we were talking about, but it caused them to malfunction prematurely but show no signs anywhere else in the tranny.

Have you had any work done on it recently?
Any more symptoms?

could be a dirty connection maybe?

and it was 18 degrees this morning, and when i started the truck, i hit the O/D right away and it engaged. i had a problem before where i could not get the light to come on/wouldn't got into O/D off. Somehow when i did my plenum it fixed the problem and it engages right away every time i hit it no matter what the temp is.

this is why i say it may be a connection because i cleaned all of mine when doing the plenum, but i dont know what i could have possibly taken off that had to do with o/d except the TB and throttle cables

it is in its own "compartment", it is the overdrive unit that dodge added to the back of the transmission in the 90's. and it is electronically controlled so it could be an electrical issue.

Well i wont know until i get my truck back wednesday night or thursday. sooo i guess i will wait till then. its supposed to be warmer then (highs in teens and twenty's then). So hopefully its just the cold or a dirty connector and not something spendy. Josh
