Who are we trying to fool here?
Its no secret the trannys in the 1500's are loaded with more things to go wrong because of their overcomplicated electronic shift control system and I bet the fact that they use the less common atf+4 fluid doesnt help as many people probably end up mixing dextron 2 or 3 in there at some point....That being said like anything mechanical there are always exceptions where they last 200k.....its just those exceptions are less commmon than say a chevy 700r4 tranny....some things are actually designed better than others lets face it....I can thingk of at least one this every one of the big three could have designed better...(and usually eventually fixed) like the bad rack and pinion design on ealy c4 vetts....very common...they used aluminum where they should have used steel....

or the crappy vats system and the tiny exhaust manifold bolts that decapitate themselves on the 3.1l early 90's camaro.

i do believe the biggest problem with the 46re is the torque converter though.

well there is one possible side effect, me and another guy on here have to wait a couple seconds after putting it in gear before it'll start to go. because the transmission doesn't start to pump fluid until it is taken out of park would be my guess on that one.

and i haven't heard of any problems with the 46rh. i believe those were put behind the cummins motors.

you want to talk about bad tranny's you should look at saturn. they have class action lawsuits against them for transmition failing just after the 75,000km warrenty. to rebuild and replace the transmition it would cost $5000 and up. that is what happens when you design your own transmition. gm wont even recall them.

If I remember correctly the only difference in the 46re and 46rh is the overdrive. The overdrive in the 46re is computer controlled where as the 46rh is hydrauliclly controlled.

And the 46rh was only in 1994 models and not all of those were.

yes but a earliy 95 would stillhave 94 parts.... the cummins uses the 47re trans same as the v10. in the 518 trans they were pretty solid but they redesigned them then put them in the ram they used weaked bands and such.. their are companys out their that sell the upgraded parts the trans should have been built with.. but generally if a shift kit is installed and the tranny service is done like it should be. it should last along time.also a tranny cooler installed heat is the enemy.
