Default Who can school me on common genII problems?

I'm looking to get a 2nd gen Ram. Looking for a 4x4 extended cab. Want to know what common issues they have? I'm in no way new to chryslers, I have an 04 Dakota and a 97 Grand Cherokee (Which I'm looking to trade for a Ram!). Just looking for some help on what is common to go out on the rams? Any help would be appreciated.

A look-over of the forum will give you many clues. Transmissions, plenums on V8s, brakes and vacuum-actuated systems are all weak points on the Dodges.

Hey thanks for the quick response. I forgot to ask, how are the transfer cases in the rams? I am not sure what t-case's they use. I have sifted through a little on here, I've always heard of the trans issues in the rams, I assume the 94-95 are 46RH and the 96-01 are 46RE? I always thought it was strange, ZJ grand cherokee's dont seem to have many issues with them.

Oh ill complain...

Anything inside the truck made out of plastic will squeak, rattle and break. Dodge plasic is very cheap, brittle and basically crapola. One thing that really pisses me off about the Dodge.

Transmissions are very touchy, if taken care of, they are o..k..
Engine is bullet proof. Other than Plenum blowing out. Thats a PITA.
Prone to rusting under doors and fenders, depends on where you are.
My water pump went out pre-maturely. Idk why.

Just look at your truck. The entire package is a common problem.

Transmissions, rear ends, vacuum stuff like miami said, headlight switch, moisture in the roof, loads of fun stuff!

Cracked dash (1998+)
Blown plenum gasket (v8 magnums)
Bad wheel bearings
Sloppy steering
Death Flash (depending on year)
Bad headlight switches
Bad TPS
Vacuum leaks
Bad speed sensors
Bad catalytic converters
Rusty doors/fenders depending on the year
Weak rear ends
Weak brakes
Clogged check valve in transmission line
Water leaks around third brake light, and various other places
Cracked heads
Flaking paint depending on the year
and of course...weak transmissions.

Pretty much anything electrical, vacuum, transmission, or steering related has issues. Add on top of that the crappy design of the plenum, and crappy dashes, you basically cover all the common problems with IIgen rams. My truck has had problems with the first 11 things on my list, but I still wouldn't trade it for anything else!

Cracking dashes is a big problem. I even keep my 2001 ram in the garage and it still cracked bad.

Can't forget about wheel bearings.
