Default automatic transmission part

so this past weekend i did a tranny service on my 04 cummins with a 48re auto in it. had troubles with the truck not starting off in first all the time. was told it was the gov. solenoid and transducer. well i replaced them and put in a new filter and fluid. anyway, on the magnet i found a small piece of curved metal measuring about 2" long, 1/16" thick and 1/4" wide.

after looking up in the tranny some i found another similar piece only longer. ends actually meet up, telling me it once was one piece also that there is another half still in the tranny, i just dont know where.

i know these being outside of the tranny cant be a good thing, i just dont know what they are. can anyone give me a little insite on what these(this) piece is and what its function is?

on a side note, the tranny does shift much better now. but sometimes hangs in gear(1st) longer than it should.

That's a snap ring.

More than likely it's the snap ring that holds the drum in place.

I hate to say it, but the tranny needs to come apart.

Hopefully it didn't tear up any of the internals.

It's not on that tranny, that problem is on the NV4500.

The NV4500 has a tendency for the 5th gear nut to back off. One of the "home" fixes is to tack weld the nut in place. It works for a while, but high HP trucks tend to break it.

How the hell did this get moved to the 2nd gen section?

That is a snap ring for your overdrive. Let me do some searching and I may find exactly what it is.

Thats your direct clutch retaining snap ring. I've been rebuilding for Dodge since 89 and have seen this dozens of times.

Haven't been using online forums for very long, though, eh? The thread you're making noise in has been inactive for two years.

Welcome to DF!
