i just got rid of my 76 ford witg a 390 bored .30 over in it 3spd on the floor i got to it was the best truck i owned

I kinda disagree..thats kinda the same old school thinking many had about the leaf springs in the front being better than coils....The independent front end has its advantages...afterall the 2002 and newer dodge ram uses the same setup as well as ford for the light duty series.... as far as it holding up i think the op wants it mainly for towing and daily driver use.(better ride quality)..and it would shine in this setup as well as having more clearence offroad. now for someone with a lift and larger tires I would say stick with solid axles especially if its going to see hard use....
but then again doesnt a military hummer H1 have independant suspension as well?

I would look at the Chevy first too, but for half the price the Dodge would win...

If you don't care about the money, get the Chevy.

For the price difference alone, to drive/tow only a few thousand a year..I'd get the Dodge anyway. Ask about the tranny maintenance and history - Most, unfortunately, do go out before 150k (not all - most).

Do they have maintenance records?

IMHO I would NEVER buy a chevy. I don't care what it was for - I've watched people I know with chevys, and watch them all fall apart...The Dodge's IMO are better trucks - Especially the cummins.

If I were to buy a towing vehicle, I'd buy a cummins, hands down. It'll tow ANYTHING, up hill, down hill, 25mph, 80mph, doesnt matter..try getting your chevy (or ford, although I don't mind them) to do that..

The upside to the chevy would be the tranny is prob a bit more durable, and you've got a bigger engine...But they have all sorts of problems of their own...Everything has some faults in it.

see now thats just your experience....I have both and my chevy is 26 years old and still more reliable than the dodge..the reality is they are both about as reliable overall but with these two truck the chevy wins.... they do all have their own weaknesses and every truck is different plus how its been taken care of matters

I did mention that was my personal opinion.. Lol. That's all he wants, though, is some opinions.

If you had equally good luck with your chevy and dodge, more power to you. Personally, we've done great with Dodges, and I don't think I'd ever buy a chevy after watching some friends we know with them.
