Thumbs down Replace 5.2 Transmission with 5.9 Trans?

The title pretty much gets right to the point. I've got a 2000 Ram 1500 RWD with a 5.2L engine. The transmission went out, for sure, and I found a guy selling a transmission from a 1998 Ram 1500 RWD with a 5.9L engine pretty cheap. So will it work, and if so, can I use the torque converter from my 2000 with that transmission? I ask because the converter is less than 6 months old on the transmission that went out.

Also with regard to the transmission, my OverDrive button never worked. The truck always seemed to switch to overdrive way too quick and pressing the OD button would not disengage it. Where would be a good place to start troubleshooting this problem? If it's something going on inside the transmission, then possibly the replacement will fix that problem?

^^^Yup.

Same tranny in those trucks. They're both 46REs. You'll be fine.

don't reuse the torque converter from a bad tranny !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it holds all the clutch material and steel shavings and will blow it through the good trans and take that one out too.

I Absolutely second this... No matter how hard you try I do not believe you can clean them out completely.... For the cost of another TC, its not worth the Risk of ruining a transmission... What are you going to do with the Transmission you take out?

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully I'll be picking up the trans tomorrow and have my truck back on the road the same day. Thanks for the heads-up on the torque converter! I bought it brand-new from a transmission shop here in town for $120.. and you're right that certainly isn't worth messing up another tranny so I'll be sure to pick up another. Will the overdrive issue resurface with the new transmission? Hopefully not but only time will tell! I'll post back with results soon. Hope everyone had a happy new year.

If the electronics are good in the new transmission the overdrive issue will be gone with the old transmission. Keep your old transmission around and when you have the time and money... Rebuild it yourself.

Unhappy

Which electronics specifically? I had replaced the OD solenoid and TCC solenoid on the tranny that went out but after i installed them I still had the OD problem. The damn button just didn't work! It used to work great, I hadn't used it in a while and one day when I needed it it just didn't function. It was my intention to take those expensive solenoids I replaced out of the old tranny, thoroughly clean the screens and then use them in the replacement tranny.

if one a 2wd and one a 4x4 it will not work

other than that if it was from a 1500/2500 5.2 5.9 it should fit

i wouldnt get a junky TC either, id get the best one you can find IMO
