How are you making out on this? You get the truck back up and driving now?

Update: just started! Pulled x member, exhaust, shafts last night, todays goal is to yank the bitc% (the main x member kicked my but, I had to spread the frame with a scissor jack and still struggle to pry/dead blow that thing down/forward out!

... I had to figure out how to afford repair and best way to go about it for my "situation"

I decided to have my trans rebuilt by a local well known (good rep shop) they are BBB rated a+, 24 mth warranty, family owned business 10 years, so far, very good personalized initial service, we will see... and I will report back good or bad over all

the shop is American Carz, local in Phoenix area (your welcome to comment on if you know them) I did my goggle search and clean (**the other shop I was considering "1STOP Transmission" turned out to have a bad reputation/history)

American Carz advertises on ebay and other places, total rebuild with HD re-man tig welded torque converter and tax is ~$1000, Alex, over there spent a lot phone time with me after business hours and gave a thorough description of what will be done and that knowing its a heaver 3/4 ton truck they will upgrade rebuild parts and valve body kit etc., his description was as complete as I have heard or read for a complete overhaul, if any non rebuild able parts are found, they have good cores avail and will not add $

Thanks again for the replies and help on this, it was my main guidance, hope it helps future searchers. I will update if anything changes and with results.

BTW, for those considering buying a rebuilt trans from one of the places on ebay etc. my advice is to first try to shop local.
I would not consider the hassle of waiting on truck shipping, core charges, *hopping they will send your $300+ check for core you paid! re-shipping, waiting for warranty etc.

on different note/ Trans.
Anyone know what to look out for on an Aisin AW-4 out of the XJ Cherokee, its what I use in my crawler, I have a spare ready to go and want to get into it for a rebuild/refresh, its the same trans Nissan used in some Z cars, as far as i know its a strong unit that can handle a lot of tq, but been told its not "rebuild" friendly, just replace with plenty full salvage one

Default Results! Not Shifting into Overdrive

Results! Not Shifting into Overdrive

Well, not all good, installed the rebuilt transmission this weekend and everything went together no problem, but on the test drive all was good until I got up to highway speeds.

its not shifting into overdrive, and its does odd things when pushing the OD off button, pushing OD button acts like its locking/unlocking the torque converter (only sometimes affecting anything at highway speeds) when it does react, its only slight difference in RPM again like its connected to the TC clutch?? I can feel the TC lock and un lock but something is not right, when cruising under light load, right foot holding speed left foot tapping the brake it feels as though the TC is momentarily locking/unlocking based on a signal from the brake pedal

I have triple checked all electrical connections to the sensors etc.

Monday, hopefully after some advice here first I need to call the shop that did the rebuild.

Is it ok to start a new thread dedicated to the no over drive issue? or am I just kidding myself to think that this has an answer other then something went wrong with the rebuild?

Some additional info:
-I was able to get the in rad cooler clean (soaking over night w/carb cleaner), I am running with out the check valve, through the rad cooler out to factory aux cooler, I stole the Cyberdine digital trans temp gage from my jeep project, the sender is in the pressure line before the in rad cooler

-it runs 120-140 most times, gets up to 180 range in the hills where I live but doesn't stay high for long, I have an elect fan mounted up but have not wired it up yet

================================================== ===

Update/Edit: Internal wiring harness was replaced

I took truck to shop that did rebuild on Tuesday, today they told me that the wiring harness in the transmission was bad (described it as signal(s) to solenoid(s) was not working)

said its rare for a harness to go bad, replaced it with a new one ($86) and "there" test drive was fine, they had to pull pan, valve body etc. to get to everything, but trans stayed in truck

picking up tomorrow and we will see..

so far other then the problem the shop has been helpful with good customer service
