My 1996 has both. I am going to take them off or replace them though.

I've never understood the purpose of a 4X4 badge. If you can't tell my truck is 4WD you're obviously into other stuff....

You think thats bad. How about Jeep several years ago putting 4X4 badges even on the 2 wheel drive Cherokee's. Now that doesn't make sense. Guess they thought 2wd would tarnish the name.

Maybe the gate decals were like the Indy Ram decals. When you ordered a Indy Ram in 1996 it came in just blue and white with no Indy Ram decals. They were included inside the truck, it was up to the owner whether they got put on or not. This could be the case with your gate decals.

My '99 SLT and '01 ST both have had the 4x4 decal on the tailgate. My grandpop's friend has a 1994 2500 4x4, and his does not have it, just the "DODGE" decal on the upper left. He bought his truck new and I don't remember it ever being there.

Maybe your truck was built on Monday or Friday.

It's not unheard of for a dealership to swap parts from one new vehicle to another due to damage in transit or while sitting on the lot. Perhaps your original tailgate was swapped out from a 2WD truck prior to your granddad purchasing it.

^ That is quite possible, since I don't ever recall seeing it on there. I'm not concerned. It's not like I have to tell the whole wide world that I drive a 4x4. If they really want to know, they can stoop down and look at it.
