on my 99 5.9l 1500 my light switch failed for my fog lights so i'm trying to bypass it. the headlight switch still works and i know the relay and the bulbs are still good the switch has just gotten an intermittent problem with the fog lights. so i tore it apart to check the contacts and lost the spring, so now i have to bypass. I would like to wire my fog lights so that i have an auxillary switch to turn them on and off and bypass the highbeam switch so that i can still have my fog lights on when the high beams are on. should i use the current fog light relay or completely rewire the fog lights? i can get them to work, but my concern is wanting them to work on high beam as well, and if i just tap into the current wires the switch still turns them off on high beam. please help, getting frustrated... thank you

 

honestly i would just use the factory connectors, and run some new wires to them, and put it on its own switch. i have offroad lights next to my fogs and i turn them on with my highs and i can see so much better.

 

so u can run both fogs on high, or only the new ones? and what was the easiest way to wire in the new fog lights? i know how to do a lot, but wiring isn't one of my specialties yet...haven't done a log of it, so i'm not sure the best way to wire fog lights.

 

The best way to wire up lights is to use a relay. This takes the load off the switch, and will reduce the amount of voltage drop to the lights, making them brighter (These lights will be brighter than your stock harness) Using high quality 10 gauge wire (Dont bother getting it at parts stores, I get mine at RadioShack) run 2 wires directly from the battery. One will go to the switch, and the other to the relay. Get whatever switch you want (the Shack has many different varieties) and mount it wherever you want in the cab. Run one of the wires to the switch (Switch will come with scematic). Then, put in a ground for the switch. The last connector for the switch will go to the relay to trigger it when you turn the switch on.

Now for the relay:
Mount the relay on the firewall, where it is easy for you to access. Run the wire from the switch to Pin 86 on the relay. The wire from the battery goes on Pin 30. Pin 85 is ground. Pin 87 goes to your lights.

That should help you with your new wiring harness.

Also, I forgot. You need to put a fuse on the power wire that goes to the relay. I used a good waterproof Bussman fuse.

 

Yup, run a separate relay and separate switch very easy and straight forward.

 

no i cant run both fogs on high, just the new ones, but they are 100W each, way more powerful than the stock fogs, and i have the silverstar ultra headlights which if anyone was wondering are awesome

Get a used switch from the junkyard for 5 bucks and there is a way to bypass the high beam shut off. Done it when I had my '96.
