BROKEN EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT (pic)
just thought i would share another idea to try to remove broken exhaust manifold bolts in the head.. i bought a spring loaded punch harbor frieght $5 bucks and that CRC FREEZE OFF penetrant from napa 6 bucks . Anyways i sprayed the broken bolts in pic (both rears were broke flush in the head) and used the spring punch to start a point to drill and aid in getting the penetrant deeper in the threads by "shocking" it , thats what the can says anyways, but i continued to use the punch several times after i sprayed and i could see the rust run out of the bolt hole like blood out of a bullet wound, repeated this a few times and was able to get one out using a pick like a srewdriver on the outside of the bolt, just thought i would throw this out there and maybe it would work for someone else.... but have one more to go taking a breather, lol not working so good on the back one (pic) but i will try a few times before i drill, also i know this a stupid question but i bought left hand drill bits, are they made for the drill to be in forward mode or reverse, i now im gonna get chit for this one, lol
if bolt is flush or just sticking out of the head and you have access to a welder, clean the area really good and weld a nut on the bolt in the head, since the head is cast iron the weld wont stick and you can screw the bolt out, ive done this a few times and it hasnt failed me yet
left handed drill bit are easy to come by nowadays...and a spring loaded punch is just that, a punch with a spring in that when you push on the punch with your hand it pops. basically an alternative to using a normal punch and hammer...
Spring loaded punch, is a center punch used for marking the start point for a drill bit.
Handy for areas where a hammer and a punch are not practical.
Left handed bits are easy to find in tool and machinist catalogs like Travers and MSC, I've been using them for years..
EDIT guess I shoulda learned how to type faster LOL

spring loaded punch taken apart , the one in the pic comes in handy i couldnt get a hammer and punch back in there so i used this, did a pretty good number on the broken bolt , didnt even phase the punch, not bad for being harbor frieght...
i got the two rears out now i have this broken middle stud, i dont have enough threads to put two nuts on it and back one off, i tried channel locks, vise grips on smotth part but no luck. any suggetions? about to go to town to find a replacement stud or bolt for its place when i get it out, was gonna look for a stud extracter tool??? home depot, sears? gotta get this done this weekend, thanks
what are you putting in place of the stock manifolds? if you use summit shorties or pacesetter shorties, that rear stud needs some of it cut off anyway, because theres no way to get a nut on or off...oh, and when you go to put whatever it is you're putting on, use fel-pro gaskets, not the crap paper ones that come with the kit.
as for the broken stud...i'm assuming you've been using the freeze off. so with that said, you could take a nut or something and weld it to the stud...that will give you something to wrench on.
