i had the same problem except i had some added problems and it all turned out to be a ground wire at the rear of the truck,
there was a bad ground in the utility body (it has a knapheide service body) but i fixed that. maybe that ground wire being disconnected for so long screwed up the multi switch?

Edit: how the hell do you get that switch out?

watch for leaks when switching to synthetic.....this could be your problem lol. you've lost out on blinks cuz you lost the fluid. try a quart of Lucus Blinker additive...works great.

mine was a ground at the very rear. when following the harness from the drivers side tail light, i came to a connector, and the ground wire had broken off right where it enters the clip, so i by-passed it, re- wired and all is well.
