Default A/C Vents only run on high

Hi all! I have a 2001 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 2wd with the 5.2L V8.

The other morning the A/C & heater vents stopped working on any setting other than the highest. The A/C still cools and the heater heats, and all of the functions (dash, floor, defrost, etc...) still work. But the fan speed only works on high; the three lowest settings give me nothing.

What do you think? Is this probably a dead switch and I need to replace the little panel that has all three dials? Is there some other problem that may be causing this? Is there a way to diagnose the switch to know for sure before I drop $160 on a new switch panel?

It doesn't sound like the switch to me. It sounds more like the fan motor resistor

Care to explain why?

Edit, only reason I ask is... anything to do with the dash I don't consider easier than anything haha. I cracked the bezel last time I removed it, and then more cracks showed up too. At least in my case I would be happy that it was the resistor lol. Either way, here you go OP.. it is only a few steps.

Thanks pcfixerpro! This was very helpful. It looks like a farily easy fix and the resistor is only a $50 part versus $160 for the switch panel.
