I had the same problem but my blower motor froze up but would spin on high.It burnt out the resistor.I replaced it 3 times until i found out it was the blower motor also.it takes about 2 min to change it.What happen was the solder on the resistor fail safe would burn out and then not let it get power I didn't buy a new one the 3rd time I just solder it back up.
SO start with the resistor and if it pops its the motor.

My blower would only blow intermittently, whether ac or heat, and then only when set on high. I replaced the resistor, no change. Replaced the dash switch and now have ac/heat on all speed settings. However, the only air blows through the defroster vents. Regardless of whether it's set on ac, heat or outside mix. I've been told it's due to a vacuum line glitch. Possibly a line break or plugged line Am I headed in the right direction by checking just vacuum lines and connections?

Yes. All vents are controlled by vacuum. If there is no vacuum, the vents default to defrost.

Well,,,the dash vents along with all vents are working. What it all came down to was accumulated dirt. The slide/closure inside the dash switch was caked with grime from the roads I drive and the vacuum pulling air. I cleaned the slide and all works well now. Thanks to one of you guys that had something to offer. They were all good tips

Well, I finally got around to replaceing the blower motor resistor and it did the trick. It was a REALLY easy fix... $50 at O'Reilly Auto Parts and about 5 minutes worth of work. The old resistor was cracked in several places and had some browning from heat. There is no doubt at all that it needed replacing. With luck, the problem doesn't go any deeper than that. Thanks for the advice, guys!

Spoke too soon. There is nothing blowing now. The vacuum is still present (checked) yet the blower doesn't work at all now. This began yesterday, this evening I checked again, the blower motor worked through all vents. Checked an hour later, just the defroster vents. Now the blower motor isn't working at all. I've no idea what to do next with this thing. I've changed the resistor, changed out the dash switch, there is vacuum, the fuse is still good. I'll follow any direction given at this point. Any help?

How old is the motor? Getting power to it? Getting a good ground thru the switch?

Pull the control unit out, and make sure everything is plugged in good.

The motor is the original in this '96'. Every ground I've checked seemed secure, granted that's not to say one strand could'nt offset the entire chain. I'll check vacuum and the connecting plug tomorrow, when it's not yet 100 degree's here. Lawdy the forecast is for 110 degree days next week. This fix is becoming desperate. Thanks again for your direction Brian, I truly appreciate your input as well as that of all others.
