Default Bad catalytic converter? > 3000 rpm, bang, bang

This is my problem:

Tried to pass a car yesterday at 60 mph - kick down - engine reves up but at 3000- to 4000 rpm backfire twice no more acceleration. In neutral the engine reves up without problems and backfire in gear > 3500 bang bang - could this be the catalytic converter? - 1999 Dodge Ram 5.9 Magnum 98k on the clock - maintained regular.

Greetings from Germany

Uli
