Sorry to jump into this old thread but I am thinking I am having fan clutch issues too.
I recently replaced my water pump and other cooling parts including the fan clutch (not that there was anything wrong with the old one). Since getting the truck up and running again, there is a very loud roar from the engine compartment while accelerating.
So my question is, could it be possible to get a new cluth from autozone that is bad? Also what test can I do to narrow down the fan clutch?
Also a stupid question: Is the fan supposed to be turning all of the time? My old one turned all the time as does my new one.

Thanks

Simple friction will keep the fan spinning when the engine is running. How much air it is moving depends on engine temp though. The roar you hear is the fan moving a large volume of air. At first start-up, (cold) you should hear it a bit, then it should quiet down, until engine comes up to operating temp, then it may be louder again at low speeds.

Yours sounds pretty normal to me.

Ha, thats good to hear. Maybe the old fan clutch was totally shot and this new noise is how the truck SHOULD sound. Thanks!

It's possible to get a lot of things from Autozone that don't work. I have the original fan clutch on my 2000. And I never hear any roaring from it, cold or hot. Check the blades for damage, and try this for a test. http://www.ehow.com/how_5086903_test-fan-clutch.html
