factory posi install
First off...I know that when a posi unit is installed it needs to be shimmed properly to set the backlash so that there is enough freeplay so everything works as it is intended.
Now, A friend of mine used to beat the hell out of an old S10. he was breaking rearends left and right. He would go to a junkyard or a friends or whereever and get a new carrier, bolt his ring gear on and go. He never had any issues related to backlash, he was always blowing up spider gears and the carriers, gear mesh was good, no noise or binding.
My question: If all factory components are reused, factory gears, factory posi unit. Can i just bolt and go? What he said, was that as long as the shims stay with the housing on the correct sides everything will bolt in, backlash will be set.
Now the hot rodder in me knows this cant always be right, but assuming the gears and carriers are all machined to the same tolerances, that would make the housing the variable in the equatuion, which would be why you would need to shim.
Am I completely wrong on this one or?

Found it! One of the two anyway. There's another DIY listed in the Durango FAQ as well.
