pretty sure that solenoid could be replaced by yourself if you have any understanding of an auto trans.... I replaced a couple of solenoids in my blazer's auto tranny, it was'nt that bad a job. Not sure on these trans, but on that they were visible with the pan off. Sounds like time for a fluid change anyways....

Ya, I saw a write-up on the solenoid repair on another forum. I'll see if I can find it.

Ok, here it is. This is from tactransman on another forum. You might not know who he is, but others can testify that he knows his stuff. I trust what he says with no doubts.

P1740 TCC O/D Solenoid Performance
The number one cause for that code is the torque converter clutch not locking up. (The TCC part of the code, usually means the converter is going out)
If the computer sees no TCC lock up,it will disable the ability for the transmission to shift to OD because it would over heat.

He goes on to recommend a Transgo TF OD JR kit as the fix. When asked about a writeup on changing the solenoid, he says this is the only thing he has ever really seen, but that these problems are almost never the solenoid - usually the torque converter.

If you clear the code, does your TC lock up?

my blazer had a bad case of torque converter shudder from the time we bought it up til the trans let go a month or 2 ago. What it is is the TC trying to lock up, but not being able to do so successfully. Does yours have any shudder?

ive got 82k on the odometer. bought it at 74k assuming its stock. i had the governer pressure sensor and solonoid changed and a fuild/filter change about 1k ago.

the truck drives fine for about 30mi with no problems (no slipping, crunching, hard shifts or shudder). ive cleared the code and it does the same thing. it ususally happens driving down the highway, and it just pops out of 4th into 3rd (very smooth, just as if i turned O/D off)

would changing the torque converter fix the problem then? thats the only thing i do on trannys theyre like a black box to me

also anyone know what tranny i have? 2001 with a 318. ive just been guessing its a 46RE

Your are correct, it is a 46RE.

Do 2 things:

1. Tell us what the code # is
2. Drop your pan and check the fluid color and for shavings

Report back...
