with those damn coils, it's all marketing. People say "it feels better" and, "it runs great" but it's not due to the coil. they think it's because the coil is made by MSD or ACCEL that it's gonna improve there engine performance. It's a bunch of crap though. Just my 2 cents though...

On the topic of coils and wires. Does the same thing apply to wires as it does coils. Is there any difference between the expensive wires and the cheap ones? Besides cost. What about the sizes of the wires?

Its not all marketing and hype with the coils. The standard coil can only take a few volts (not sure on the number) coming in and it will output around 10,000 volts. The MSD and accel coils can take 10,000 volts coming in (delivered by a CD ignition) and output the 30,000+ the companies claim. On a stock engine it is not necassary the stock parts work fine but on a forced induction or high compression ratio engines the extra volts are needed to jump the spark plug gap. All that being said I have a Summit CD ignition an MSD coil and Taylor cable 8.0 MM wires on my 94 with a 360. I did not notice any improvement.

As far as wires go its pretty much the same deal the cheap wires can't handle the high voltages. I would not buy cheap wires as quailty ones are not expensive (I paid $45 for my taylor cables) and they reduce the chances of arching.

I had an Accel coil just die on my after 3,000 miles in the S-10. Replaced with a NAPA coil and now I'm golden. Run a NAPA coil in Purpl, too.

And BTW the same goes for spark plug wires, ACCEL and MSD both suck.

So if I need to replace my wires the generic AC DELCO ones will be fine?

That's good to know. It's hard as hell trying to shop at an auto parts store. Since joining the forums, I've pissed off a lot of the auto parts stores because they try to sell me stuff that's no better than the cheap stuff.

If you REALLY want to know about wires, read cmckenna's post. That guys a wealth of information.

I only changed mine out for an Accel because the stocker was rusting out and making it hard to start. Been running fine, no popping like others have mentioned. Did increase my plug gapping though to compensate.
