Well I know its a Dakota, not a Ram, and OBDI instead of OBDII, but you could start by reading through my post here to get an idea...

Or here is 2nd gen Dakota write up. Again, not a Ram, but at least it deals with the OBDII electronics...

Basically, you need the transmission, the clutch, clutch hydraulics, and a computer flashed for a manual transmission.

An auto PCM expects to run the transmission, and if it doesn't see the transmission is there, will throw CELs. On my OBDI computer, that was not a big deal... the CEL didn't stay on, just simply stored the codes and did not change how it ran the engine. On your computer, however, it will throw the truck into "limp-in" mode and your engine power output will be severely limited.

Yes, this would be true.

I would try to nab a 5-speed manual from a 2500 5.9L V8, a NV4500. Stronger than the 5.2L/3.9L's NV3500 manual in the 1500s.

The NV3500 may work just fine (it'll bolt up), but it's not designed to handle the higher torque/power of a beefed up 5.9L V8 if you beef the engine up later. Stock, you should be OK.

Edit: nevermind. posted before reading. Jason is exactly correct. The NV3500 is a good tranny and would do the job for that 5.2 unless you tow a lot etc. but just drivin, doin burn outs etc. it'll do just fine. I've got it in my v6 and i hate the motor, but the tranny is nice. Shorter clutch than the NV4500 to for slightly qicker shifts.
