When i bought my 2001 ram, it was riding on P275/60R15 tires and some custom rims. The truck also has full length running boards that run along the wheel wells. I guess whoever did the conversion thought the slightly smaller wider tire would look better with the running boards.

I've been thinking of finding some stock rims and 75R16 tires. I kind of dig the stock rims that came on the sport versions.

Any of you guys run stock tires with running boards, to get an idea of what it might look like? How would it change the way the truck rides?

I'm not on stock rubber so I can't help you with looks, but in regards to how the truck would ride, it would put it back to factory spec so your mpg would go up along with making your engine and particularly your transmission happier lol: mainly an increase in torque and reduced drivetrain stress.

 

get some 16 inch stock wheels or 17 inch stock offroads and some big tires and ditch the little wheels and running boards. those are for old people. get some nice stainless step bars, either black or shiny, your choice.

big tires cause your get up and go to suck, so don't go too big. no bigger than 285/75 (33")

 

I've found some used factory mag rims for sale off a 98 1500 Ram with 315/75/16 tires. I know Rams came stock with a few different tire sizes. How would I determine the width of these rims and if they'd work with a factory tire? I'd like to return to the 225/75/16 stock tires.

I'll probably leave the running boards on for now as the paint is probably a noticeably different shade due to fading.

 

if they're factory rims, they are probably 7 inches. assuming the owner of the wheels has tire mounted, can you just measure them to inside and outside + about 1 inch for lug plate width ?

315's are pretty damn wide. are you SURE they're factory wheels ?

 

If I were you I would not go all the way to a 225/75/16 my truck came new with 245/75/16 tires and anything smaller would look wierd and not perform that good in wet weather
If you really want to go smaller than a 245 maybe a 235/75/16 its a pretty common tire size might be able to find tires cheaper

 

Did the Sport versions come stock with 245/75/16 tires? If I understand correctly, a 245/75/16 would be taller and wider than a 225/75/16? Are the stock ram sport rims wider than the regular 1500 rims?

 

My sport came with 265/75/r16's and power was great and mpg was good to.

 

the only difference between those two tires is width

width/sidewall height/rim size thats how it goes

im sitting happy at 265/75/16 tires..as you can see in my sig..there not all that big..but there not stock
stock my 16x7 inch rims came with 225/75/16..IMO for a Ram anything smaller than 235/75/16 isnt enough tire

 

The sport edition Rams came with the exact same tire options as regular Rams, and they were all 16x7 (rims) in size.

The only trim package that offered different rims was the Off Road edition, which came with unique 17 inchers.
