It's tire time!
Rick,
I don't know if you've bought your tires yet, but I have run the generals and thier street manners are awesome. I don't know if my reviews are still on tirerack.com...
I will also interject that the tires I purchased were a bit dried out from storage and I did not get the tread life out of them as an off road tire. I actually destroyed one when I glanced off a rock, popping a fist sized chunk of tread off the sidewall/corner of the tire. Again, I think it was not the tires fault, but bad storage.
I still have an AT for my spare. But after about a 16 months of driving I had to replace them because they were wearing so quickly.
If you bought the generals, I hope you have a lot better luck. Agian they were awesome street tires and worked well in what rain and snow I could find in the high country of Arizona.

^ Most of the people I know that have ran any kind of General tire has complained about the short tread life. I know that they are prone to chunking off parts of the tread on rocks too. Just par for course with a soft tire.
hopefully the grabbers are made with a different rubber then ameritrac generals. that was my last set of tires and they were junk. good in the rain and a smooth ride, but i had a vibration when stopping for every second or third stop and i didn't figure out that it was the tires until i got new ones. also, i drove over some small rocks that didn't look sharp and one of them dug a chunk out of the side wall. my old bfg a/t tires could handle rocks, bottles, stumps and only get a mark on them that would wipe off, that is why it surprised me that a rock ripped a chunk out of one of the generals.

FYI, General is owned by Continental Tire, a company with a good reputation.

id get nitto terra grapplers....i got em and i got 5k miles on em so far and i love em to death.....my dad has 42k on his and lil under half tread on a 3/4 ton cummins.....my good friend also has 50k miles on his and hes got around 25% left so they are awesome in my opinion just depends how you treat em.
I should not that the damage happened on a VERY narrow side road on a mountain, and I not only finished the trail ride, bu tdrove home on the tire and it did not blow. That was pretty impressive.
If you want to get tires that tear and chunk easily, buy Intercos.

Wow! That's totally contrary to the many reviews I've read. Like here:

I know for a fact that when a person goes and writes a review on anything, they do one of two things. 1. They don't fully test the product and write a review about something they don't fully understand, or 2. They had a bad experience with them and just to be spiteful, they write bad reviews all over the place.
I don't know about the rest of the country, but around here, all we grow is rocks, and most new 2500 and up Dodge trucks are coming with General tires on them. Not only do most people that I see in them get short life from them, the ones that I do see usually have notches in the tread, gashes and large chunks torn off the side of the tread.
Do what you want, but in my area, they have a reputation for being a soft tire that wears very quickly. Great for cold and snow, but not a year round tire.
^ i had a set a couple years ago on my durango, did alot offroading in clay pit's and wore the hell outta those tires, they'er awesome to ride on street but offroading they dont really last all that long. mud yea i can see that but any thing to do with a harder surface they tend to wear out quicker than most.
