But when I had a 318 with a blown plenum and a bad tranny I could get 15 highway. Now with a healthy 360 and a new tranny I am only getting 12-13. I thought fixing the tranny and plenum would make it go up not down. I drive 450 miles round trip for school so every mpg counts.
most here are young lead footed kids and will tell you the mpg sucks either way.... depending on how and where you drive you will usually waste more gas cause the truck will be sluggish and you will be gassing it more to get out of the hole....if you spend most of your time on flat highway going over 55 then yes you can get better mpg...if you do a lot of city or pulling or hill climbing forget it. just my experience from expeience with different gears in the same vehicle...Most dont even comprehend that if their tires and gears dont share a stock ratio the speedometer and mpg computer and odometer are off and incorrect anyway...unless they changed it with a tuner.

you wont believe this but it is true i have a 1986 dodge d-250 2wd with a 1971 440 thats been rebuilt to 70' 390 hp specs and it has a 727 tci built trans with a dana 60 rear with 3:23 gears and it gets 12mpg consistent and i use my gps navigation because the speedometer doesn't work and my gps is correct!

now my 2001 dodge 1500 4x4 5.9 auto 3.55 gets 9-11mpg thats all!!!!on highway the truck does get better but the 1986 always gets 12mpg even highway or when i drive it to work!although i can get it down to 9mpg easy if i am towing.

I always thought these newer dodges would get way better fuel millage and really a 5.9 isn't real big in my book!

one thing though is my 1986 has to run premium fuel and the 2001 runs fine on 87

Man Miami, mine must have something horribly wrong with it. I am getting 7.5 steady around town.

Mine will dip into the high 7s if I do nothing but city driving and sit in traffic for long periods. Thankfully, I can split lanes here on my Harley and I rarely take the truck in heavy traffic.
