you'll notice clunking, and possibly a sway,

have you checked them visully by grabbing each cap and trying to move it

Clunking when you first hit the gas or let off it, drive line vibration while accelerating/cruising and squeaking at low speeds are a good indicator. You're talking about the drive shaft on the 2wd right?

The quick test (if it is bad enough) would be to grab the drive shaft and try to spin it while watching for moement the u joints.

The best way would be to drop the drive shaft and hold it in one hand and the yoke in the other and move them around, you should know for sure if one of them is bad by doing that.

Blown wheel cylinders can squeak from the rear at low speeds also.

Mine had a slight squeak at low speeds that progressed into a pretty loud squeak before i changed the u joints out. You need to go ahead and check them, you don't want the drive shaft to fall off because a cracked u joint cap fell out.
