transmission service at a shop will run anywhere from $100-200.
you should do it yourself. its not hard, just a little messy. if you take the opportunity to put in a drain plug, it'll make it easier and neater next time. cost of fluid and filter is about $50.
and this is important.. if your truck has not had regular transmission service, then you'll notice a heavy coat of gray sludge inside the pan, and all over the bottom of the valve body. you can clean the pan, but understand that the entire transmission is coated in that same sludge. your new transmission fluid is loaded with detergents which will break loose that sludge and put in back in suspension, where it will pretty soon clog up your new filter, which will pretty soon ruin your transmission. also know that draining the fluid only actually drains about half of the old fluid. so - there is a huge benefit to changing the fluid a couple of times, about 2 or 3 or 4 weeks apart.
don't use any other fluid than ATF+4.
