I've been told 96-98 were all the same but, who knows what factorys dealings were with vendors for the 3 years.I doubt your ? can be answered. If you find something different, just switch it out and go. A real transmission guy will not have a problem with the issue.

Default I work at a school, and our bus mechanic just talked about this today

He had a 97 and put a 98 in it. Said direct bolt up, but all sensors had to be changed. Said it worked great for over 100k miles.

Earshot, I just finished up today. I had a late start and I ended up replacing my U-joints while I had the drive shaft off along with a few other things.

Everything converts over easily except the speedo sensor. There is not a place for the speedo sensor on the 98 trans. I do not have a speedo now.

Other than that I only had to switch one sensor from my old tranny. The cooler line fittings and everything else were exactly the same.

So, if your speedo is important to you then you need to find a 97 or possibly earlier tranny. I have a gps with the speed on it so it's no biggie for me. It's also just my work truck.

Hope this helps,
Curt

Here is a pic of the speedo sensor. Look for that if you find another tranny. The 98 tranny did not even have the spot for this sensor.
